I'd like to take a moment to remind everyone that summer swim team is about friendship, learning to swim, improving strokes and sometimes winning a race or a meet. We have a lot of competitive young kids on our team and we need to make sure that they are encouraging one another at practice and at meets. Practice is not about trying to beat everyone in your lane; it's about focusing on your technique and improving YOUR strokes to be the best swimmer that you can be. Please resist the urge to compare your swimmer to other swimmers. Each swimmer has his or her own unique strengths that they bring to our team- please try to encourage them to build those strengths as we progress through the summer season.
See you on the deck! Coach Cory

Nemo Parents,
We are so proud of all the of the progress the Nemos have made these past 2 weeks. Many of the kids who were timid about getting in the water on the first day are now swimming the width (and sometimes length) of the pool unassisted! We have our first meet Wednesday evening from 6-7 at the pool. It is extremely helpful if we have all of our swimmers arrive on time so that we can all warm up together and start the meet. The Nemos will swim the length of the pool twice in any fashion they choose (with a kick board or swimming freestyle or backstroke). Coach Sabrina or myself will swim along side of them. The meet should be over by 7 o'clock at the latest. We will be having practice from 8-8:30 tomorrow morning (Tuesday, June 27), not 7:30-8 like we normally do. After practice the swim team is hosting a pancake breakfast and we would love for the Nemo swimmers to stay and join us if you are able. The breakfast will go from 8:30-9:30. There will be no practice the morning of our meet (Wednesday, June 28). Have your swimmers sleep in and rest up for the meet Wednesday night. We are so excited for you to see how far your swimmers have come! See you at the pool! Just Keep Swimming, Coach Mackenzie and Coach Sabrina Hi Marlins, We have a great team! Good job swimming and cheering on each other today. Below is information about ordering photos. We have exciting week ahead of us. WEEK 5 IS BUSY: 6/27 Tuesday- No practice except for Nemos. Mac Butler and I filled in clerking today and it was a good time getting to talk with all the swimmers. If you haven't signed up to help with four meets and one social event please do so. We have some open volunteer slots. It takes a team effort to fill the 280 volunteer meet slots and 60 social position slots. We are looking for one or two volunteers to lead the movie night (buy the supplies and direct the volunteers). You can find the sign-up links on the website. A core part of our team spirit comes from our big and little buddy program! Every swimmer who participates is assigned a buddy. Buddies are asked to give a small token of encouragement throughout the season. Most families do some form of encouragement at every meet, but this is not required. It can be a handmade sign, a card, a healthy snack, a favorite candy… any small trinket! During swim team practices, blank paper and markers will be supplied! Please note: we had WAY more little buddies this year so some of the Big buddies were paired with 2 little buddies, (listed in blue) or may also have a Nemo, (listed in red). If you see any problems with your pairings or no longer wish to participate, please let me know as soon as possible. This list will also be posted at the pool. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks! Beth West Hi Marlins,
Hope all is well! Thanks to everyone for pitching in and helping out on Friday night. Upcoming Events: Monday: Nemos practice is M-TH and swim team shifts to Morning Practice (M-F) Tuesday: Make sure your availability is marked for the upcoming meet on the google doc. If you can't get that to work, email me your swimmer's availability. Tuesday evening the league hosts a training for stroke and turn, starters, clerks, and referees. If you are interested in learning more about any of these positions, the training is from 7-8:30pm at North Cape Arthur Pool (238 Cheshire Rd) Thursday: Chick-Fil-A Day Spirit Day- please stop by Chick-Fil-A and mention that you are with the Berrywood Swim Team, and the team will receive a portion of the sales. Friday: Tie-Dye Day at practice- Bring a shirt to dye before or after practice. Siblings and adults are more than welcome to dye shirts as well. Saturday: Away Meet at Fair Oaks (476 Fairoak Dr). Warm-ups start at 8:30am, so please try to arrive by 8:15am. If you are new to swim team, there are some suggestions on the website under the Q and A tab or just email me and I will send them to you. The website is a good resource: www.berrywoodswimteam.weebly.com. If you have concerns, comments, or questions feel free to reach out. Stay Calm and Swim On! Dear Parents and Swimmers,
First let me say that you all have been FANTASTIC these first two weeks of practice! Swimmers have been eager to jump right in and swim, regardless of rain and cold temperatures! We are looking forward to seeing everyone race at Time Trials tomorrow night! There are a few topics that I want to address before we move into our full morning practice routine: - Several swimmers have mentioned ears hurting during practice... my advice is to get a bottle of SwimEar or Swimmers Ears drying drops to put into their ears after practice every day. The drops are available at CVS, Rite Aide, etc and will dry out any water that remains in their ears, helping to prevent an ear infections. - Several swimmers have asked if they can swim two different practice sessions. While I LOVE their enthusiasm, our practice groups are already large and if everyone wanted to swim more than one session it would get pretty crazy! So please stick to your practice session unless you have a one-time conflict and need to switch for the day. - Remember to ask your swimmer if he or she is HAVING FUN! The goal of swim team is to both develop good strokes/technique/speed AND to enjoy the water! If you are a parent of a swimmer who seems reluctant to get in the pool, please make sure to find out if they are enjoying practice. We want summer swimming to be a fun and memorable experience for them! See you on the deck! Coach Cory Hi Marlins,
The time trial is on Friday, June 9th. I know a lot of you are pros, but for some of you, it is brand new. Swimmers should be to the pool by 4:30pm, if possible. Volunteers for the meet should try to be there by 4:45pm (unless you are helping with set-up, then please be there by 4pm). Here is the schedule of events for that evening... 4-4:30pm: Pool Set-up for meet. If you can help, please come on down and/or send your swimmer to help. 4:30-4:50pm: Warm-ups 5pm- Meet Starts 7pm- Meet ends Sip n Dip is being set-up during the meet and the hot dogs are being cooked so that when the swimmers are done swimming their last event they can start eating. Swim Team provides hot dogs, chips, lemonade, and s'mores for swim team members. There should be extra food (unless all the swimmers are really hungry), but families should plan to bring food items and drinks to share in a potluck style. The bonfire will start around 7:30pm. Please sign-up to help if you can. We really need a few more people to sign-up to help with the bonfire and the sip n dip. If you have twigs, branches, and wood please bring that down to the field by the park. Nemos are invited to come and watch a big meet, eat some yummy food, and participate in the Bonfire and s'more fun. Stay Calm and Swim On! |
